Another favourite dip around here! Slightly lightened up and doesn't use any sour cream or heavy creams. The flavour is amazing and makes for a perfect game day or hosting appetizer!

If you love bold, spicy flavors but want a lighter option for entertaining or snacking, this healthy buffalo chicken dip is the perfect recipe to add to your rotation. Creamy, cheesy, and packed with classic buffalo flavor, this dip delivers all the comfort of traditional buffalo chicken dip with a healthier twist. It’s high in protein, easy to make, and perfect for game day, parties, or even a quick weeknight snack.

What makes this buffalo chicken dip healthier is the smart ingredient swaps. Instead of relying solely on cream cheese and heavy dressings, this recipe uses a combination of cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. The result is a dip that’s just as creamy and satisfying but lighter and higher in protein. Shredded chicken adds hearty texture and makes this dip filling enough to serve as more than just an appetizer.

This healthy buffalo chicken dip comes together quickly using cooked, shredded chicken—making it a great use for rotisserie chicken or leftover chicken breasts. A generous splash of hot sauce brings that signature tangy heat, while garlic powder adds savory depth. Shredded cheddar cheese melts beautifully into the dip, giving it richness without overwhelming the other flavors. Finished with fresh green onions, this dip is balanced, flavorful, and irresistible.

This recipe fits perfectly if you’re looking for a  healthy buffalo chicken dip, lighter buffalo dip, high-protein party appetizers, and easy game day snacks. It’s a crowd-pleasing dish that works for everything from Super Bowl parties to casual get-togethers, and it’s easy to customize based on spice preference or dietary needs.

Serve this healthy buffalo chicken dip warm with celery sticks, carrot sticks, tortilla chips, crackers, or sliced bell peppers. It also makes a great filling for wraps, sandwiches, or baked potatoes. Leftovers reheat well and can even be enjoyed cold straight from the fridge—if there’s any left!

This healthy buffalo chicken dip proves that comfort food can still be nourishing and flavorful. With its creamy texture, bold buffalo kick, and simple ingredients, it’s a lighter appetizer you can feel good about serving—without sacrificing taste. Whether you’re hosting a party or just craving something savory, this dip is guaranteed to be a hit.

I love this dip for its small size! Perfect for groups 2-4 and it usually goes quickly. It’s also just a perfect lazy dinner or late night snack if you’re craving something cheesy and cozy but still relatively healthy!

How To Make Healthy Buffalo Chicken Dip

The Ingredients

Shredded Chicken: Shredded chicken is the protein-packed base of this dip, making it filling and satisfying.
Substitutes: Rotisserie chicken, canned chicken (drained well), turkey, or shredded jackfruit for a vegetarian option.

Cottage cheese: adds protein and creaminess. Our favorite is Good Culture. If you’re not a fan of the texture, consider blending it or substitute it with cream cheese
Substitutes: Neufchâtel cheese, light cream cheese, dairy-free cream cheese, or additional Greek yogurt for a lighter version.

Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt lightens the dip while adding tang and extra protein.
Substitutes: Sour cream, skyr, dairy-free yogurt, or plain yogurt (strained for thickness) or mayo

Hot Sauce: Hot sauce gives the dip its classic buffalo flavor and heat.
Substitutes: Buffalo sauce, cayenne pepper mixed with vinegar, sriracha, or chili garlic sauce.

Garlic Powder: Garlic powder adds savory depth and enhances the overall flavor without overpowering the dip.
Substitutes: Fresh minced garlic, roasted garlic, or onion powder.

Shredded Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar cheese provides richness and that melty, cheesy finish everyone loves.
Substitutes: Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, mozzarella, pepper jack for extra heat, or dairy-free shredded cheese.

Green Onion: Green onions add freshness, mild onion flavor, and a pop of color.
Substitutes: Chives, red onion (finely diced), or parsley.

What You Need

The Steps

  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • Add shredded chicken to a large bowl and toss with cottage cheese and yogurt
  • Stir in hot sauce and spices. Add in 1/2 cup of shredded cheese
  • Add mixture to a small baking dish and top with remainder of cheddar cheese
  • Bake for 20 minutes
  • Remove from heat and top with green onions
  • Serve with veggies, crackers, chips and/or baguette slices

Recipe Tips

  • Green onions add a nice flavour but the dip is still super delicious without them.
  • If you don't love the texture of cottage cheese, I'd recommend blending it first or swapping it with softened cream cheese (delicious but lower in protein).
  • If you're making it for the Super Bowl, consider making some football lines on top using  mozzarella strips and broiling for a minute or two until the cheese melts.
